| Nullarbor Plains | ||||
Spectacular wild coastline and the chance to see whales in the Southern Ocean make this journey special. Heading from Adelaide you pass through the the industrial / transit town of Port Augusta before heading out on to the Nullarbor Plain proper. First stop is the mining town of Iron Knob (guess what they mine there...) to see the giant tonka trucks, before continuing through the Gawler ranges. The three largest species of Kangaroos, Reds, Greys and Wallaroos are all common here. Further along, the Head of the Bight, near the Nullarbor Roadhouse is one of Australia's premier whale-watching sites. Southern Right Whales use the relative warmth and clam of this area during May to October to mate, give birth and to raise young to the point where they can follow their mothers back into the Antarctic Ocean in the southern summer. There are several other lookouts along the Highway before you reach Eucla. Here you can see the ruins of the original telegraph office, now slowly being engulfed by shifting sand dunes. There are also several substantial limestone cave systems underground here. The Eyre Highway then continues west, offering the option of continuing straight on to Kalgoorlie and Perth, or head south towards Esperance. The rough 4WD track south passes along some magnificent cliffs and beaches, as well as through the remote Cape Arid and Cape Le Grand National Parks. Whales are finally returning to the waters around Esperance, a former whaling port, and are often seen around August - October. |
