| Snowy River Country | ||||
Snow is not normally the image that first comes to mind when one thinks of Australia. During our winter, this area becomes the focus of the ski industry, with major ski resorts including Mount Hotham and Falls Creek in Victoria, with Perisher Valley and Thredbo just across the border in NSW. In summer, this Alpine region offers some of the most inspiring scenery in the country. This collection of tracks transverse through the region made famous by A.B. "Banjo" Patterson's poem, "The Man from Snowy River", and later by the film and TV series of the same name. The track heads east from Bright and passes through the aptly-named Mt Beauty before climbing towards Bogong and Falls Creek, before winding through the Bogong High Plains section of the Alpine National Park. Mount Bogong, to the north, is Victoria's highest peak at 1985 meters. A short stretch of highway towards Omeo gives a respite from the dirt before the track heads east again and back into the park. European pastoralists began grazing in the region around Omeo in 1836, and soon extended to the higher country. Huts were built for shelter and storage during mustering - Wallace's Hut near Falls Creek, built in 1889, is one of the oldest surviving. From the 1850s to 1890s, the gold rush lured many people to the region, and towns like Dargo, Omeo and Bright have strong links to the gold era. The Oriental Claims Historic Area is a monument to the contribution of Chinese miners and workers on the goldfields in the last half of the 19th century. Heading north via the lookout at Benambra, the track reenters the Alpine National Park and follows part of the Bicentennial Trail used by riders to make their way to Canberra in 1988. Just before crossing the NSW border, the track meets the Snowy River, and follows it for some distance, allowing chances to view this amazingly beautiful watercourse and the surrounding river valley. A fantastic viewpoint is the Wallace Craigie Lookout, a short distance from the track a little further north. The track gives way to tarmac around 30 kms south of Jindabyne, allowing for an easy last stretch. Jindabyne has a range of accommodation and eateries, as well as a huge man-made lake with opportunities for waterspouts and fishing in the summer. From here it is an easy drive of around 35 kms to Thredbo, the end of this tour. A great ski resort in the winter, in Summer Thredbo offers opportunities for bushwalking, climbing and mountain biking, amongst other activities. Mt Kosciuszko, Australia's highest peak at 2228 meters above sea level, is an easy day hike from Thredbo. |
