  Tasmania's North East

Tasmania's compact size and varied topography and climate allow you to experience many different environments in a short space of time. From Launceston, it's less than 50 kms to Pipers Brook, one of Tasmania's excellent wine growing districts. Several of the wineries here do cellar door tastings and sales. The Ninth Island Pinot Noir from Pipers Brook Vineyards (P.B. Road, P.B) is personally recommended!

Cutting back south via Targa, it is possible to travel through forests and farmland on dirt roads all the way to Ben Lomond National Park. A skiing area in winter, in summer the park offers great walks and climbs, including Legges Tor - at 1575m it is Tasmania's second highest point (after Mt Ossa). A road known as Jacobs Ladder winds it's way up to the peak - the road is a narrow dirt track and features multiple hairpin turns as it climbs. This area and the added altitude can mean cold temperatures, even in summer - warm clothes are recommended.

From here our proposed route turns north, and travels past Mt Victoria to reach Branxholm and then continues on forestry trail to Forester and then towards Gladstone. From here a detour to Musselroe Bay is usually rewarded with sightings of Eastern grey kangaroos and Bennet's and red-necked paddymellon (small wallabies). The southern end of Mt William National Park features the historic lighthouse at Eddystone point, as well as wild surf beaches.

Continuing south, St Helens offers warmer temperatures than most of the island, and surfing is popular here in summer. Just out of town (about 10 Km) is Binalong Bay, famous for the whitest sand in the world. From St Helens, it's another 90 km or so south to reach the turn off to the Freycinet Peninsula, with its excellent walking trails, and one of Australia's finest wilderness lodges - Freycinet Lodge.
