| Wilpena Pound & Flinders Ranges | ||||
Flinders Ranges must rate as one of Australias most spectacular regions, but has so far gained little recognition internationally. Its peacefull and awe-inspiring landscape of rugged jag-edged mountains, Red gum lined river gorges and ever changing colours both humble and inspire. Wilpena Pound, shaped like a massive natural amphitheatre really needs to be seen from the air to appreciate its vastness. The area has been of religious significance for thousands of years. Wildlife is abundant here, with Red Kangaroos, Wallaroos, Emus, Wedge-Tailed Eagles and many species of parrott commonly sighted. The National Park and the area around here is the sole domain of the beautiful and rare Yellow-footed rock wallaby. Once close to extinction, careful controls on land use and feral animal mangement have seen their numbers slowly increase. There are many great walks in the region, ranging from short walks into the Pound to see the resored Hill Homestead, home to the family that farmed the land for over a decade at the beginning of the century, to longer more strenuous hikes like St Mary's peak. An eight hour return jouney,this climb to the highest point in the Flinders offers unbelievable views as a reward. Arkaroola, north of the pound in the Gammon Ranges, plays host to an observatory - you can't imagine how many stars you can see out here. Arkaroola Rock nearby has charcoal and ochre paintings on the walls of this natural shelter. The Gammon Ranges National Park, in the northern Flinders area is an arid wilderness, and an important historic area for the Adnyamathanha people who are the traditional custodians of the region. Walking trails and the rugged Weetootla Gorge attract the more adventurous here. |
