Ship Cove: Famed for being a haven for Captain Cook during one of his voyages to New Zealand. It was here that he found scurvy grass which was used to treat the sailors for Vitamin C deficiency. Ship Cove is now a reserve ideal for families and picnicking.

Wakamarina Valley: A former gold mining town where you can still pan for gold and see the remains of the era such as bridle tracks, village clearings and old dwellings. Everybody is guaranteed to find something here, from gold to serenity.

Dominion Salt Ltd: Situated on Lake Grassmere at Blenheim, these solar saltworks cover an area of 1800 hectares. Dominion Salt supplies much of the Australian dairy industry's high quality salt need and also sends a variety of general and pharmaceutical grade products to the Pacific Islands and Asia. Annual exports now total 15,000 tonnes and are steadily growing. Visitors are welcome on Tuesdays and Fridays at 1330hrs for guided tours.

Oak Tree Cottage: Located 20 minutes south of Blenheim this heritage cottage is open seven days a week and features unique gifts, crafts and a scenic picnic area. This cottage was built in 1874 and was a national finalist in the 1994 New Zealand Tourism Awards.

The Kaikoura Wildlife Centre: At the wildlife centre you can swim with the dolphins and fur seals, see the sperm whales, wave ski or join a guided wildlife walk. The centre offers discounts to families and YHA members. The phone number of the centre is (03) 319 6622.

Special Events:

February - The Marlborough Food and Wine Festival. Held to celebrate the huge production and variety of gourmet food and wine in the region. The festival even has its own currency - Festival Francs which are used to purchase various wares.

October - Pacifica Kaikoura Seafest. Held on the first Saturday in October at the Takahanga Domain. Here you can try seafood delicacies and fine local beers and wines.
