Don River Tramway: Begun in 1854 to bring timber out of the Don Valley, the original tramway was replaced by a rail line in 1916. The new line brought limestone from quarries worked by BHP, until the limestone too was exhausted. It stayed open until 1963. Eight years later it was restored and revived by the Van Diemen Light Railway Society and is now Tasmania's only full size passenger railway. There is also a steam railway museum and a miniature railway.

Home Hill: The family home of former Prime Misinter Joseph Lyons and his wife, Dame Enid, built in 1916, a year after their marriage. Carefully preserved, the house has some fine Queen Anne furniture and many unusual artifacts given to Lyons during his career. He was Premier of Tasmania from 1923 to 1928 and Prime Minister form 1932 to 1939. In 1943 Dame Enid became the first woman elected to federal parliament.

Tiagarra Tasmanian Aboriginal Culture & Arts Centre: A fascinating and wide-ranging display documenting the culture of Tasmanian Aborigines - now, tragically extinct. The centre is built on a sacred site, and rocks along the nearby coast are decorated with Aboriginal carvings. Open daily. Closed July.

Wheel House: A museum documenting the development of early pedal power transport. Open daily.

Tasmanian Maritime & Folk Museum: This museum has a display of model sailing ships based on the vessels which visited Tasmania in the early days.
