The Riverina comprises of the area to the north of The Murray; rolling hills contrasting with vast flatlands. The Murrumbidgee River winds though the region and is the heart of the irrigation system that provides the region with the capacity to produce fruit, vegetables, rice, wheat, wheat, meat and wool. The Riverina Region is located midway between Melbourne and Sydney, and only 2 hours from Canberra. This is a region of classic country towns and large old pubs and the flourishing cities of Wagga Wagga and Griffith. The town of Tumut provides easy access to Kosciusko National Park and Yarrangobilly Caves. The city of Griffith developed as a result of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area. The town now is one of the most prosperous food and wine growing areas in the country. Wagga Wagga is the cultural centre of the Riverina, with galleries, theatres and museums. The city also contains extensive parklands and floral displays earning the title "Garden City of the South". The Murray River is Australia's most important inland waterway. The Murray forms much of the border between New South Wales and Victoria. It flows from the Snowy Mountains in the north east to Encounter Bay in South Australia. The Murray is famous for its forests of red gums. Echuca, once Australia's busiest inland port, has a kilometre long red gum wharf. Echuca is full of colonial heritage and you can take a ride in a horsedrawn carriage or a restored steam engine. There are paddlesteamers which operate along the Murray River allowing you to explore the area and also take a step back in time. Albury-Wodonga is a popular area on the NSW/Victoria border. Albury is an ideal base for a variety of activities including skiing (in winter), canoeing, white-water rafting, fishing, water skiing and bushwalking. There are also wineries and gold mining towns nearby and along the river are many historic towns.

Fact SummaryThe Murray is the most important river system in Australia. Together with the Darling River the Murray is the water source for most of Australia's major cities. The Murray is also an important irrigation source providing water to all dairy, fruit and vegetable and crop farms. Unfortunatley the heavy irrigation demands from the Murray have led to a high amount of salinity in the soil which have placed the future of farming under threat in this area. |
