Getting Around

Sydney buses run a great service called the Sydney Explorer which patrols a 20 km of tourist attractions allowing passengers to get on and off as they please. There are plenty of normal scheduled services around Sydney and suburbs. The Airport Express Bus runs between Circular Quay and the Airport with limited stops along the way and there is a shuttle bus between The Rocks and Darling Harbour. Ferries depart frequently between Circular Quay and Manly, Taronga Zoo and suburbs such as Balmain and Hunters Hill. There is a large network of trains throughout the city and suburbs an an overhead monorail which runs between the city centre, Haymarket and Darling Harbour.

Buses: The SYDNEY PASS is a cost effective way to travel and explore within Sydney. The passes start from $85.00 for a three day adult ticket. The pass includes travel to and from the airport on the Airport Express bus and unlimited on Sydney Buses, Explorer Buses, Sydney Ferries,Sydney Trains (as far as Bondi Junction and Chatswood) , Jetcats and Rivercats. The BUSTRIPPER is a pass that allows you to travel on as many buses as far as you like for a whole day for $7.60. The DAYPASS for $12.00 gains access to Sydney's buses and ferries for an entire day. A DAYOVER for $20.00 gives access for buses, trains and ferries for an entire day.

Trains: Trains usually run between 4am and midnight daily. When entering the train station, look at the overhead boards at the turnstiles and look for your destination, platform number and departure time. Once at your platform check that the overhead board has an orange light next to your destination. NIGHTRIDE buses leave Town Hall in George Street and stop at major rail stations after midnight.

Ferries: Sydney Ferries operate guided harbour cruises departing from Circular Quay. Harbour Passes are also available. Take an afternoon ferry ride to Manly.

Money: Australian currency is the Australian Dollar and is displayed on the current exchange as AUD. It is a decimal currency system with the smallest denomination being 5 cents. Traveller's Cheques can be cashed at any bank, major hotels and Bureau de Change. Commission free transactions can be obtained from The Singapore Money Exchange situated in Darling Harbour, Chinatown, Kings Cross and Centrepoint (not Australian Travellers Cheques). Automatic Teller Machines are located throughout Sydney and operate 24 hours a day and accept most credit cards and international transactions. All major credit cards are widely accepted throughout Australia.

Telephones: Public phones can be found on the street, in hotels, cafes and shops. Local calls cost 40 cents. International and long distance phone calls can be made from any public phone. The TELSTRA PHONEAWAY CARD is a prepaid card which charges calls at competitive international prices which can be used to call more than 30 countries. The TELSTRA PHONEAWAY CARD can be used from most phones and is available from leading travel agencies,airport shops and from Telstra shops. If in an emergency dial 000 for police, ambulance and fire.

Post Office: Post offices are located throughout Sydney. Business hours are usually 0900 to 1700. Sydney General Post Office located in Martin Place offers facsimile, stamps and express post and parcel post services, business hours are from 0815 to 1730. To collect mail, identification such as a passport will be required.

Shopping: Hours vary between suburbs, however the general shopping hours are Monday-Friday 0900 to 1730, late night shopping is on Thursday until 2100 and weekend opening hours are Saturday 0900 to1700 and Sunday 1100 to 1600.
