Anzac Park Bandstand: Stretching along the river-banks, shaded by spreading fig trees and palms. Anzac Park is the perfect setting for the small square bandstand, a graceful and decorative structure with lacy iron panels typical of the Victorian era, although it was not built until 1913.
Bank Cabaret Restaurant: A satisfying example of an historic building still leading a useful life, this grandiose former Australian Bank of Commerce (1888) has a facade richly decorated with Classical motifs. A number of original features have been retained in the interior, creating an interesting atmosphere for the restaurant.
Criterion Hotel: Former stockman W A Ross, after whom Ross River and Ross Creek were named, opened the first Criterion Hotel on this site in 1865. It was described as "quite a big affair", with twelve foot verandah and balcony all round". The present pub, also sheltered by a wide verandah, was built in 1904. Inquires 077 71 2271.
Currajong Heritage Centre: Three houses illustrative of the vernacular styles that evolved between c1880 and c 1939 to cope with the Northern Qld climate.The houses have been moved to this site and are being meticulously restored, authentically furnished and developed as a folk museum of domestic life. Customs House: Commanding a superb view of Cleveland Bay and dominating a main corner near the waterfront, this fine building was designed by the Colonial Architect and built in 1900 to 1902. The curve of the grand entrance portico is echoed by the low, circular lookout tower. The building is of red brick faced with granite from Magnetic Island.
Former Magistrate's Court House: The first of Qld's imposing public buildings, a rather severe Classical Revival building (1876) with a weighty portico. Now the Community Information Centre.
RAAF Museum Townsville Annex: This museum features a unique collection of engines, uniforms, photographs, models and memorabilia, spanning the history of Northern Australia military aviation.
Great Barrier Reef Wonderland: One of Townsvilles top attractions, it has an impressive aquarium as well as a theatre, museum and shops. There is the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, a good National Parks information office and a terminal for ferries to Magnetic Island.
