Since 1915, the outback community of Coober Pedy has attracted dreamers seeking the fire within the opals found here. To avoid the hot semi-desert sun, residents build their homes underground where the temperature remains pleasantly constant.

Now visitors can stay in the Desert Cave, an international underground hotel built into the side of a hill. It is one of the world's truly unique hotels where the 50 guest rooms include 19 that are underground, supplemented by a subterranean bar, cafe and shops.

The texture and pattern of the hotel's naked rock walls is beautiful and the furnishings are stylish to match. At its heart, the main foyer extends into the earth and soars to the sky. You will find the rich colours of an inland sunset reflected in the light captured within Coober Pedy opals.
