In the hectic and demanding age we live in, the opportunity to recapture the gracious lifestyle of a bygone era is a rarity. This is one aspect of Wharekauhau which makes it remarkable and special. In the Grand Hall huge mullioned windows look out on views of breathtaking beauty while massive fireplaces throw out warmth and comfort from grates alive with blazing logs.

In the living room and hall, large comfortable sofas and deep chairs provide islands of luxury for meeting and talking or for private moments alone, just reading, writing a letter or merely enjoying one's own company with a favourite drink at hand.

Everywhere sumptuous furnishings, antiques, rich rugs, fine table ware, exquisite food, wine and sparkling company come together in a spirit of warm country hospitality.

In the evening,Another picture of the hotel guests gather in the living room for cocktails and conversations about the day's events. As daylight fades and the talk becomes more lively, guests move to the dining room where tables are lavishly set for the start of a memorable meal prepared with the best and freshest local ingredients from sea and land.

ACTIVITIES
For those who prefer leisurely pursuits there is much to do around the lodge. Reading in the library, card games, a game of petanque perhaps, or croquet. With 5000 acres of private land including ancient forests, peaceful lakes, rivers, rolling pastureland and a wild and breathtaking coast, there is little shortage of choice when it comes to choosing a route for walking.

Balance the luxurious relaxation of Wharekauhau's accommodation with the activity of your choice, in superb surroundings. Work out in the fully equipped modern gymnasium, or after a few laps of the 20 metre indoor heated pool, relax poolside and take in the tranquility of the courtyard garden. If you're still feeling active a superb astro-turf tennis court awaits.

Slightly more strenuous tramping expeditions are also available. Some head off around a coastal trail while others take to the hills to experience the song of native birds and the distinctive smell and texture of the New Zealand bush.

If you enjoy fishing and water sports, this is paradise. Wharekauhau is well equipped to offer its visitors the chance to fish for deep sea snapper, snorkel for shellfish and rock lobster or surfcast off Wharekauhau's ten kilometres of private beach.

Perhaps a little wine tasting is the order of the day ... Martinborough is fast becoming a "must see" destination on any New Zealand itinerary. The high sunshine hours and low autumn rainfall have helped local winemakers win international awards. It is distinguished from other New Zealand wine areas by the high quality proportion of red wine grape planting's and a reputation for
quality pinot noir, among other varieties. Only 45 minutes drive from Wharekauhau, we are happy to arrange transport for winetasting tours of any of the 20 boutique vineyards.

Everyday some new excursion is mounted. Often the weather wil
suggest the best way to enjoy your time. For those who love riding, it's the easiest thing in the world to saddle up the horses and head off to explore the countryside alone or in company. Four wheel drive safaris, bushcraft, climbing, caving, flying, opportunities for golf and sightseeing in one of the world's most magnificent environments are just a few of the other activities guests can experience.
