Visiting the three main National Parks of the Top End (Litchfield, Kakadu and Nitmiluk) this "up market" safari explores the remote areas of Litchfield and Kakadu as well as offering a true cultural experience. At Manyallaluk Aboriginal Community, "the Dreaming Place" day three is spent learning about Aboriginal lore, bush medicines and tucker. Accommodation on tour is in our permanent camps which are all equipped with our purpose built "Safari Tents". The permanent safari tents are locally designed for our tropical climate. You'll enjoy the comfort of this spacious cool design. Each tent has two standard size single beds with mattresses. (Please note: Our Camp at Manyallaluk for two nights is a mobile camp) At all camps we use traditional Aussie bushman's swag, which have high-density mattresses, a pillow, linen, blankets and towel. Meals are prepared and served by your Camp Host, using proper cutlery, glassware and crockery. Each camping area is serviced with hot showers and flushing toilets. In the evenings you will enjoy sumptuous candle lit dinners from the campfire. Vegetarian and other diets are catered for, but be sure to let us know your requirements when booking.
Day 1
We leave Darwin and head south across the Elizabeth and Finniss Rivers to Wangi Falls. Along the way we'll stop to "Boil the Billy" by a pretty stream. Travelling on to our permanent safari camp at "Minjungari" which gets its name from the beautiful blue water lilies on the billabong nearby. After lunch the 4WD vehicle is put to work as we venture further into the remote, less visited areas of this tropical wonderland to Sandy Creek Falls. These falls cascade into beautiful plunge pools surrounded by tropical rainforests.
Day 2
Awake at dawn to take a scenic walk amongst the eucalypt forest and paperbarks. After breakfast we break camp and travel south across the southern plains of Litchfield to Pine Creek, scene of a major gold rush a century ago. We then continue on to the river township of Katherine. The next two night will be spent at our Katherine Camp.
Day 3
This morning we travel to on to Manyallaluk, "The Dreaming Place" where we meet some of the traditional owners of this area, who will share their knowledge of bush tucker and bush medicines and demonstrate their skills in craft work, collection of materials, woven baskets, mats and bark painting. A chance also to try your hand at spear throwing, didgeridoo playing or traditional fire making. At day's end we'll return to our camp on the Katherine River.
Day 4
This morning we enjoy a cruise on the majestic Katherine Gorge. After the cruise, a visit to the Nitmiluk Visitor Centre and then a picnic lunch before we head northwards into the spectacular stone country of Southern Kakadu National Park. In the late afternoon we arrive at Gunlom Falls and settle in at our permanent safari camp.
Day 5
You can take an early morning hike to the top of the falls for spectacular views of the surrounding country. We continue our journey to the beautiful Maguk (Barramundi Gorge), where you have the chance for a refreshing swim after a short trek through the surrounding monsoon rainforest. This afternoon we visit the Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre, an impressive building built in the shape of the local freshwater turtle. Here you will learn about the traditional Aboriginal owners of the park, their culture, beliefs and lifestyles. In the late afternoon we enjoy a sunset cruise on the world-renowned Yellow Water wetlands. Here we have a chance to see the teeming bird life and perhaps, the awesome saltwater crocodile. Our accommodation for the next two nights is at our permanent safari camp at Mardugal.
Day 6
Today we travel along the 4WD track to Jim Jim and Twin Falls. At Jim Jim, we can explore the gorge at the base of the tallest cascade in the Territory. In the afternoon we visit Twin Falls Gorge, where we travel by shuttle boat firstly, and then explore on foot to the base of the falls. Late in the afternoon we return to our safari camp at Mardugal.
Day 7
After breaking camp we visit Burrungui (Nourlangie Rock), a large sandstone outlier towering more than 200 metres above the surrounding area, sheltering 20,000 years of Aboriginal culture depicted in art forms in many galleries. We turn for home along the Old Jim Jim road, making a short stop at the Bark Hut Inn. Arriving back in to Darwin around 17:00
