Leaving Cairns we travel to the Atherton tableland, a high plateau of the Great Dividing Range. Its picturesque rolling hills boast fertile volcanic soils which support lush tropical rainforest, home to many endemic and endangered species of plants and animals.

As dusk falls, watch the playful antics and feeding habits of the strange but wonderful Platypus, uniquely Australian and one of only two monotremes in the world, a species believed to be 130 million years old.

Before venturing into the rainforest we'll have dinner in the delightful pioneer village of Yungaburra. Then we'll visit a remarkable species of mega flora, the wondrous Curtain Pig Tree, a gigantic epiphyte, said to be more than 500 years old.

Now we travel on into the misty jungle of the night. Here we'll use spotlights to find and photograph some of the wonderful nocturnal animals of the rainforest.

Amongst those that we frequently encounter are Green Ringtail Possums, Herbert River Ringtail Possums, Lemuriod Ringtail Possums, Brushtailed Bettongs, Pademelons, Quolls, Owls and the unusual Lumholtz Tree Kangaroo.
